The winds died down sometime in the night, and once again, I set out in the morning in calm weather. My goal is the old Navy Base (map point 6). This turns out to be a most enjoyable day. Sunny and with just enough breeze to create good surfing waves, I'm in paddling heaven. As I approach the Base, I am startled to see not only our Explorer, but a couple of other trucks. I can't believe that the B.L.M. rangers would come out on a Saturday to check our permit, but who else could it be?
Joy reads my mind and tells me that the people are not from the B.L.M. They are just a couple of fishermen from Los Angeles and some birders. They have been coming here for awhile and they do not know or care that they are on B.L.M. property! And I went through all the hassle to get their permission.
After loading up the kayak, we stop and visit Norm Niver, the president of the West Shores Chamber of Commerce. I laughed when I had first seen their building a few days ago. A Chamber of Commerce for just a few businesses did not make any sense. But these are not thriving communities and the few remaining businesses probably could use all the help they can get. For many years, Norm has been working hard at keeping the Sea healthy. The very future of these communities depends on the health of the Sea.
